In the dense fabric of Washington, DC, where outdoor space is a rarity, rooftops offer a unique opportunity to extend livable area and engage with the city from above. The P Street House project explores this potential through the transformation of a historic rowhouse rooftop into a serene, multifunctional terrace. The design introduces a refined sequence of spaces that support gathering, relaxation, and escape within an otherwise urban environment.Access to the roof was carefully integrated to create a fluid connection between the existing interior and the new outdoor level. Glass railings open up panoramic views of the city, while strategically placed skylights bring daylight deep into the core of the home, brightening spaces that were once shaded by the building’s original structure. A custom bar anchors the rooftop’s social zone, offering a focal point for entertaining, while soft seating and built-in planters frame more intimate, garden-like moments. Natural materials and thoughtful detailing ensure that the space feels warm, grounded, and deeply connected to its surroundings.In tandem with the rooftop intervention, the project included a full interior renovation of the home’s third level. The reconfigured layout provides a more functional and spacious master suite, along with a guest bedroom designed for comfort and flexibility. A major design challenge—and success—was the seamless integration of the old and new. Careful selection of finishes, millwork, and exterior materials ensures continuity between the original architecture and the newly expanded volume.The result is a layered, highly livable home that elevates both the interior and the exterior experience, proving that even within spatial constraints, design can unlock new dimensions of comfort and connection.
