In the wake of the 2020 pandemic, the role of the home evolved beyond traditional notions of domesticity, becoming a space that must support both professional and personal life. At the MacArthur House, this shift prompted a rethinking of spatial hierarchy and programmatic use within the existing structure. The clients sought to create meaningful separation between living and working, while preserving a sense of comfort and cohesion throughout the home.The attic, once a dark and underutilized space, became the primary opportunity for expansion. Through strategic repurposing, it was transformed into a bright, multifunctional home office. The introduction of large windows and carefully placed skylights redefined the attic volume, flooding it with natural light and creating a serene, uplifting workspace. The geometry of the roof was leveraged to provide integrated storage solutions, maximizing utility without compromising openness.Beyond the attic, the project also reimagined the primary suite. A new walk-in closet was inserted as both a functional storage zone and an architectural threshold, offering privacy while gently linking the office above to the main bedroom below. The ensuite bathroom was fully redesigned to include a sculptural freestanding tub, a spacious walk-in shower, and elevated material finishes—turning what was once a utilitarian space into a retreat for daily restoration.The result is a home that embraces the complexities of contemporary life, offering spatial clarity, functional adaptability, and a renewed sense of place for its inhabitants.
