This renovation and addition to a traditional colonial home in Washington, DC reimagines the layout and spirit of the house through a modern farmhouse lens. The design centers on transforming a once small and compartmentalized kitchen into an open, light-filled kitchen and breakfast area that seamlessly connects to the adjacent family room. This new central gathering space becomes the heart of the home, supporting both daily life and entertaining. What was once a solid wall between the family room and porch has been replaced with large folding glass doors, dissolving the boundary between inside and out. A new backyard terrace, complete with a covered BBQ area, extends the living space outdoors and offers the family a versatile setting for gatherings, relaxation, and play.In addition to architecture, our scope included full interior design services. We worked closely with the clients to blend thoughtfully selected new furniture with meaningful existing pieces and artwork, creating a cohesive and deeply personal interior. By reusing and recontextualizing what they already loved, we were able to preserve a strong sense of familiarity and history while introducing a fresh, updated aesthetic. The result is a warm, layered, and highly livable home that reflects the family’s evolving needs and lifestyle, while remaining rooted in their values and memories.
