Oliver House

MODERN ELEGANCE

This residential addition, located in the heart of Washington, DC, reimagines the traditional framework of a colonial-style home to better serve the evolving needs of its occupants. The design replaces an underutilized patio enclosure with a thoughtfully integrated addition that expands both the kitchen and living areas, introducing spatial generosity while respecting the character of the original structure. At the core of the intervention is a desire to enhance daily functionality without disrupting the home’s architectural rhythm. The enlarged kitchen becomes a central gathering space, seamlessly connected to the newly created family room, which offers a relaxed zone for communal living. Natural light is carefully introduced through large openings that soften the transition between old and new, enriching the overall flow of the home.Below, a new wine cellar was introduced at the lower level, accompanied by structural preparations for a future second-story addition, envisioned as Phase II of the project. This forward-thinking move ensures the long-term adaptability of the home, allowing it to grow alongside the family’s needs. The project prioritizes daylight, circulation, and pragmatic elegance—resulting in an addition that not only increases square footage but elevates the everyday experience through clarity, warmth, and intention.
