Located in a historic neighborhood of Washington, DC, the Ordway House project exemplifies how small-scale design interventions can yield transformative spatial impact. Initially conceived as a straightforward cabinet replacement, the project quickly evolved into a more meaningful reexamination of how a kitchen can support contemporary family life within a traditional home.The existing kitchen and adjacent powder room were closed off from the rest of the living spaces, creating a sense of separation that no longer aligned with the clients’ daily rhythms. By removing a single interior wall and thoughtfully relocating the powder room, we were able to unlock an open and connected layout that repositions the kitchen as the heart of the home. The reconfiguration allows for effortless flow between the kitchen, dining room, and informal gathering areas, enabling multiple activities to unfold in parallel. One parent can prep meals while the children do homework at the island or nearby dining table, fostering both functionality and togetherness.Despite the project's compact scale, every design move was deliberate. Light, proportion, and material continuity were carefully considered to create a space that feels intuitive, efficient, and welcoming. The result is a subtle yet impactful transformation that brings renewed life to a historic home, demonstrating the value of precision and restraint in residential design.
