Located in the lobby of 1101 K Street, this sculptural installation transforms the building’s threshold into an experience of texture, memory, and place. Composed of thousands of maple wood dowels, the artwork captures the undulating topography of the land surrounding Washington, D.C.’s Rock Creek Park—its ridges, valleys, and river paths rendered in warm, tactile relief.Spanning 33 by 24 feet, the piece replaces a formerly neutral glass wall, introducing movement and depth to the lobby while drawing a direct connection between the street-level entrance and the public amenity space below. Visible from the sidewalk, it establishes a bold new identity for the building—inviting passersby to pause, reflect, and engage.This installation was designed by PARADIGMoffice founder Mercedes Afshar during her tenure at Hickok Cole, as an exploration of how art, architecture, and geography can come together to root a space in both material and memory.
